Cloud Toda Back on Two

In 2008, Cloud Toda was living the motocross dream. A factory rider for the Japanese Suzuki squad, Toda was set to have his best season yet aboard his works RM-Z450, but his career was cut short in a horrific crash that left him paralyzed from the chest down, and cost another rider his life. During a private track rental shared by the factory Suzuki and Yamaha race teams, the Yamaha team trainer decided to give riding the track a go for the first time, and took to the track aboard a WR250F. With no track riding experience, he stalled his motorcycle on the landing of a large, blind, four-gear jump. Tragically, Toda found himself 20-feet in the air when he spotted the trainer, right in his path.
“I tried to jump off the bike and make it miss him, but we all crashed together,” remembers Toda.

It’s been seven years since that fateful day, and Toda’s life has changed drastically. After some battles with depression, Toda has attacked his rehab routine with a vengeance and has even returned to two wheels, with the help of some good friends. We caught up with Toda in Japan last week and got to watch him send his adaptive RM-Z450 flying through the skies with more style than we ever would have expected. Cloud hopes to improve his whip enough to earn an invitation to the Summer X Games Best Whip competition…
